nomos

“What about the moment that speaks worlds.” -Mary Oliver

The grace of a school of squid gliding, darting, skittering in dark, cold seawater is the core inspiration behind the nomos series. For over twenty -five years, I have been investigating the potential of how thousands of porcelain forms in differing configurations can conjure up a sensation akin to that moment for me – the intersection between thought and feeling, an often wordless state felt powerfully in the body.

The abstraction of form, material, and gravity coupled with a whirlwind of color and texture lure the viewer in closer, inviting prolonged investigations and enticing a flood of interpretations.

Hence, the title-nomos- the Greek root for nomad meaning ‘to wander’ and ‘to wonder,’ a notion at the heart of making and experiencing the work.

shibumi

“I work and work and play and play until something floats to the surface.” -Antoni Gaudi

The pointed obscurity of this mass of abstracted objects- fluttering, accumulating, and dispersing in space- invites the viewer to linger and muse about the uncanny gestalt and wonderment of it all.

shibumi is a visual map that embodies my philosophy of letting my work unfold and reveal itself over time. The pieces are from years and years of investigations. The installation is an archeological dig of sorts: the mining of the mind, the specimens of the hand, the restlessness of the heart, and the energy of the making.

The title shibumi refers to the Japanese aesthetic of developing an intangible sense of touch, timing, and ease through practice and patience. The aesthetic is about finding the line between the elegant and the rough, the spontaneous and the restrained in hopes of coming to an unobtrusive beauty.
